Practical guide
How to message a recruiter on LinkedIn, with examples
Choose a recruiter connected to the role or hiring area, name the job you mean, and explain your relevance in a few focused sentences. Use the messaging option available to you and ask one specific question rather than requesting a general job search on your behalf.
Find the recruiter who works on your kind of role
Check whether the posting names a recruiter. Otherwise, look for evidence that the recruiter works with the employer, function, region, or level you are targeting. A recruiter at a large company may support a completely different division.
Use public profile information to form a reasonable hypothesis and make the message easy to redirect. If you already have a contact involved in the hiring process, continue that conversation instead of starting several parallel threads.
Connection message or InMail?
InMail is LinkedIn’s paid messaging option for contacting members outside your connections. Availability depends on the account and recipient. Check the options shown on the person’s profile before writing around a channel you cannot use.
A connection request and a detailed outreach message serve different purposes. If you are introducing yourself, state the relevant context briefly. Do not pretend that accepting a connection is an agreement to review your application.

Example: contact a recruiter about a specific job
This message gives the recruiter enough information to identify the vacancy and decide whether they are the right person. It does not require them to open several documents to understand why you are writing.
Example: reconnect with a recruiter you know
Mention the earlier conversation only if it happened. Keep the update relevant to the new role, and follow the process the recruiter gives you.
What to do if the recruiter does not reply
First check whether they gave a timeline or prefer another channel. If a follow-up is appropriate, send one useful clarification in the same conversation rather than repeating your introduction across email and LinkedIn on the same day.
Silence does not tell you why the person has not replied. Keep applying to suitable roles, record your outreach, and move on if the person declines or asks you to stop.
